John Lennon T-Shirt
Rock legend John Lennon, founder member and co-lead singer and guitarist with The Beatles, died 40 years ago on December 8th 1980 when he was murdered outside his Manhattan apartment. His song writing partnership with Paul McCartney still remains the most successful in the history of music. As a performer, writer and co-writer, Lennon had 25 No 1 singles.
The newsprint portrait is one of the most famous works of renowned artist Jenny Morgan. ” The idea of using newsprint for portrait work was initially an exercise in tonal values, just to challenge me. The Lennon portrait began as a quick study but grew over six months to quite a large size. I found the focus so intense that I could only work on it for a couple of hours at a time and the carpet quickly wore out with all the stepping back and forth. The act of tearing paper I found therapeutic and I embarked on a series of other portraits, some in newsprint and others in magazine scraps. I began to take commissions for personal portraits and they became very popular, ” recalls Jenny.
The Lennon portrait has been exhibited widely in galleries and art shows since its creation in 2007 and was shown alongside John’s own travelling exhibition at the time. Concentrating on portraiture for most of her life, Morgan also paints wildlife and animals in all their various settings. She studied at Southampton whereupon she became passionate and prolific with her work. She predominately still works on portraits and body forms and now shows extensively throughout the South including the newly-opened Fittleworth Gallery in West Sussex. Living close to the New Forest she takes every opportunity to paint the roaming animals while marvelling at the wonderful natural landscape. Her mediums are charcoal, pencil, pastel, collage, acrylic and a combination of all of these. After two years of ill-health and vision in only one eye, she is now back on track and ready to continue with the work she loves.
